Sminu Peter received his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of North Texas and went on to receive his law degree from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law (now Texas A&M School of Law). While in law school, Mr. Peter interned at the Federal Public Defenders Office for the Northern District of Texas, and was an active member of the school’s Family Law Association and award winning National Mock Trial Team.
During this same time, he obtained his certification in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation and also held a provisional law license which allowed him to practice law as a student attorney at the Texas Wesleyan Law Clinic.
Prior to co-founding the law firm of Peter & Lanzillo, PLLC, Mr. Peter earned the rank of Senior Associate at Stanley & Associates, PLLC, a multi-office law firm in Dallas. It was here that he met his current law partner, Johnny Lanzillo, and the two worked side by side in the courtroom on numerous cases.
Mr. Peter served as practice chair of the firm’s lucrative criminal defense section, handling hundreds of cases at a time involving various State and Federal criminal offenses. In addition, he served as head of the firm’s Hiring Committee, founding member of the Leadership Committee, and was Supervising Attorney to all attorney staff.
In addition to his extensive knowledge of the criminal system, Mr. Peter also has experience handling many Family Law matters such as Divorce, Child Custody, Child Support, and Adoption issues. He has also represented many clients in Civil Litigation, for Personal Injury cases, and in preparing their Wills and other Estate Planning matters.
Mr. Peter is a member of the State Bar of Texas, Dallas Bar Association, Tarrant County Bar Association, Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Collin County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, and the Texas Young Lawyers Association. While the majority of his practice involves State cases, Mr. Peter is also admitted to practice in Federal Court in both the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas.
As a Dallas County approved criminal defense attorney, Mr. Peter also receives special appointments directly from the county to represent indigent defendants facing criminal charges that cannot afford to hire representation. As a member of the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, Mr. Peter has helped many indigent clients navigate the waters in their family law matters. Additionally, he serves as chief legal counsel to Cloud Crash Pads, a company specializing in temporary living spaces for flight attendant personnel, as well as chief legal counsel to Peace Tree Africa, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that exists to promote sustainable development in Cameroon, West Africa.
